Good Sexual Health

When you think about sexual health, it’s about much more than the physical act of having sex. That is a part of it, but it’s also about self-awareness, positive relationships, good communication with your partner, and a healthy mind as well as a healthy body. All of these different aspects and personal connections influence your overall sexual health and allow a woman to fully and safely be intimate with her partner.

Sex can bring you closer to your significant other, give you self-confidence and pleasure. However, it’s up to you to decide if you are ready for it. Part of having good sexual health is defining your needs and boundaries. Partners should always respect your boundaries and never force you to do anything you don’t want to do. Make sure you are with someone who makes you feel comfortable and safe.

For many women, the path to achieving good sexual health may include engaging in activities on their own that make them feel sensual. This could mean watching an erotic movie, taking a warm bath or using a vibrator.

Be mindful of your diet and exercise. A healthy body makes you feel good about yourself and allows you to be your best–that includes during sex. Physical exercise not only helps to keep your body in shape but can help reduce stress which can affect your desire to even be intimate with anyone.

Learn how to protect your body. Your doctor can help you understand the different options for birth control, talk about good hygiene and protecting yourself from sexually transmitted diseases, like chlamydia and gonorrhea.

Social stigmas, difficulty confiding in a partner or just personal shame can sometimes prevent a woman from achieving good sexual health. If you’re feeling any of those ways, consulting with a doctor or therapist may be beneficial.

Sexual health is important. When you have good personal relationships and feel well emotionally and physically, you are able to have better control of intimate relationships and are able to understand and respect the value of your sexual health. Good sexual health can improve your overall well-being.
