Helping Patients Feel Informed, Supported, and Confident: Meet Dr. Mitchell Oberhelman
There’s something special about finding a career where you get to be present for some of the most important moments in people’s lives. For Dr. Mitchell Oberhelman, that’s one of the things that drew him to obstetrics and gynecology.
Cheyenne OBGYN is excited to welcome Dr. Oberhelman to our team, where he’ll have the opportunity to care for patients through important milestones, unexpected challenges, and everything in between.
The Moment He Knew OBGYN Was Right for Him
Dr. Oberhelman has always been fascinated by the human body, but it was during medical school that he realized obstetrics and gynecology was where he belonged.
During a preceptorship, he received a call at 2 a.m. to come to the hospital for the delivery of a baby belonging to a patient he had seen in the office just the day before.
He remembers watching the family welcome their new baby and seeing the happiness on their faces. Being part of such a meaningful moment made a lasting impression on him and confirmed that OBGYN was the specialty he wanted to pursue.
That experience reflects what Dr. Oberhelman enjoys most about medicine: connecting with patients and helping them feel more confident and informed about their health.
He believes patients deserve to understand what is happening with their bodies and to feel comfortable asking questions. Rather than simply telling patients what to do, he wants to work with them, explain their options, and help them make decisions that feel right for their individual circumstances.
Beyond the Exam Room
Dr. Oberhelman’s caring nature extends well beyond his work. He enjoys spending time with his wife, who is a perinatal and trauma therapist, and their two children. His family keeps life busy and, he says, full of plenty of laughter.
When he gets the chance, he enjoys just about anything that gets him outside or lets him work with his hands, including hiking, fishing, boating, snowboarding, gardening, woodworking, cooking, and DIY projects. He also enjoys playing musical instruments.
As he begins this new chapter in Cheyenne, Dr. Oberhelman is looking forward to building relationships within the community and getting to know the patients who put their trust in him.
For him, being an OBGYN isn’t simply about treating a medical condition or delivering a baby. It’s about being there for people when they need someone they can trust, answering questions, offering reassurance, and helping patients feel supported throughout their care.
